Tech people have a reputation as being Introverted, sensitive, neurotic, quirky, and difficult to manage. These same people are usually highly intelligent, analytical, creative, innovative, and have a strong work ethic. Both of these descriptions are generalities of course and may not reflect reality at all, nevertheless, managing technical people is sometimes described as “herding cats.”

How do you get a disparate group of independent individuals to work toward common goals? How do you motivate them to stay on task and give it their all? How do you minimize drama and tension to give everyone space to do their best work? How do you keep your team intact when there are hundreds of companies offering big dollars and better benefits for technical employees?

About our Presenter:
Joy Shafer is currently a Staff Software Engineer at The Climate Corporation in Seattle. She has over twenty-five years of management experience at a variety of companies, including Microsoft, Alaska Airlines, Climate, and Quardev. Joy holds an MBA in International Business from Stern Graduate School of Business (NYU) and got into the software industry via the backdoor. For fun she reads and writes fiction, removes invasive species from the forest (and sometimes her own yard), and enjoys wilderness adventures, especially if they involve kayaking.
